In Canada, the Canadian Securities Administrators (CSA) put into effect the second phase of the Client Relationship Model (CRM2) in July 2013, which was to be phased in over a three year period. Effectively the CRM2 is bringing greater transparency to the compensation that your advisor receives from your investment account. Phrases used by many advisors in the past was “don’t worry you don’t pay me the fund company does”, or in the case of purchasing individual bonds “the commission is built into the price”. The old axiom “there’s no free lunch is true”, somewhere, somehow you are paying for the investment service provided.
